Preparing For a Hurricane

blog-header
Natural disasters can be quite terrifying because they are so vast and impossible to control. Hurricanes, though devastating, are one of the few natural disasters that provide you with advance warning. When you get that advance warning, you have to decide whether you're going to stay and weather it out or whether you're going to head for drier ground. The one thing that just about everyone in a hurricane's path does though is prepare.

Preparation before a hurricane is key to ensuring that your property is not damaged any worse than it has to be. By taking adequate precautions, you can reduce your level of damage and also increase the likelihood that the insurance company will provide reimbursement for your home and possessions. Here are some things to bear in mind.

Update Your Inventory

Even if you have hired an asset protection agency, you might not think that updating your inventory and asset information is a big deal. But this is precisely when having good asset protection is so important. The chances of your home, vehicles, and other possessions being damaged in a hurricane are quite high. Even if you do everything that you're supposed to do in preparation, it's hard to beat the sheer magnitude of the winds and rains.

The challenging part when it is over is that you will have to convince the insurance company of the value that you have lost in the hurricane. Even though it's obvious that the hurricane has come through, they will want to haggle with you over what the actual value of your items was since you won't be able to give them specifics. If you have been keeping your inventory in Asset Panda, you will only need a short amount of time to update anything. Then, whatever is damaged in the hurricane, you can submit to them your own inventory report. This provides you with efficient asset protection and makes it more likely that you will get reimbursed. Make sure that you also make note in your inventory of all the other procedures that you are doing to prepare for the hurricane.

Update Your Emergency Kit

Whenever there's a hurricane on the way, make sure that you update your emergency kit. Check to make sure that you have all the supplies you need and that they are in working order. Your emergency kit does you no good if you do not have the supplies you need. If you are planning to try to leave for drier ground, make sure that you have a fully stocked emergency kit in your vehicle as well. Check to make sure you have the following supplies:
  • Canned goods
  • Manual can opener
  • Bottled water
  • Changes of clothing
  • First aid kits
  • Bandages
  • Scissors
  • Blankets
  • Scissors
  • Citronella candles
  • Plastic tarps
  • Medication
  • Hand sanitizers
  • Toilet paper
  • Emergency radio
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Infant food and diapers if you have young children
  • Pet food and supplies
  • Gather Together All Important Papers

Get all of your important paperwork together and put it in a waterproof bag. You need to make sure that you have the following documents in the bag and ready to go at a minute's notice:
  • Driver's licenses
  • Social security cards
  • Proof of residence through deeds, leases, bills
  • All insurance policies
  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates
  • Stocks
  • Unpaid bills (remember they are still due even in a hurricane)
  • Wills
  • Tax returns
  • Green cards
  • Credit cards
  • Bank account information
  • Checks
